10-Year Retrospective Exhibition

"Celebrating the Genius of Women"
by Maria Guerrero, Founder & Exec. Director, Women in the Arts Inc.

This series showcase works from: Katerina Tsitsela from Thessaloniki, Greece; Katty Smith, New Smyrna Beach, Florida; Kim Minichiello, Windermere, Florida; Laura Bates, Maitland, Florida.

In her search for ultimate truth, Katerina explores in her painting "Untitled," her perception of internal landscapes or landscapes of the human soul. The artist works with dark colors and subtle tones gradually transformed by light, illuminating space and figures in this journey.

In 2020, Katty made a transition from sculpture to abstract painting incorporating characteristics of her sculpting approach and translating her experience into a new art form full of color, detail, and texture as in "The Looking Glass" painting.

Kim has a deep affinity for Japanese culture: its cuisine, customes design traditions, textile arts, and horticulture. When she traveled to Kyoto one year during the cherry blossom season, she fulfilled a long-held dream to see the Miyako Odori, a rare public performance by maiko and geiko ("geisha"). In Minichiello's watercolor, “Miyako Odori," she paints three maiko from the dance ensemble.

In her painting "Cypress Retreat," Laura drew inspiration from the sunset colors reflected in a cypress swamp in Florida.

10-Year Retrospective Exhibition

"Celebrating the Genius of Women"
by Maria Guerrero, Founder & Exec. Director, Women in the Arts Inc.

This series highlights works from our award-winning artists Hope Lugo, Sanford, Florida; Jeanee James, Merritt Island, Florida; Jennifer K. Martin, Florahome, Florida; Kaliya Kalacheva, Sofia, Bulgaria.

In her painting "Cassandra," Hope brings together multiple layers of symbolic elements into a fluid composition, emphasizing the main subject and allowing the viewer to discover many details open to interpretation.

Jeanee's "Lean Into The Storm" is a mixed media sculpture. The artist reflects about her work: "This came to me as the message I wanted to give my twin daughters, as they went off to start their lives as young adults. Leaning into the storms and hard times of life is the best way to get through them."

In "The Island," Jennifer allows natural processes to "paint" and preserve change of inorganic materials on a metal surface. Inspired by patterns, color, oxidation, life, and decay in physical, geological, and biological fields of scientific study and observation, the artist focuses on the material aspects of these events, and how best to convey this beauty to the viewer.

Kaliya's painting "Crowds In The Forest" is part of the series "Change the Scenery." The concept envisions the artist or perhaps the viewer's own reflection in the glimmer of the gold and silver accents and in the small human figures, questioning their place as main characters or perhaps mere pawns.

10-Year Retrospective Exhibition

"Celebrating the Genius of Women"
by Maria Guerrero, Founder & Exec. Director, Women in the Arts Inc.

It is my pleasure to introduce in this series, works by past honorees: Edi Matsumoto from Carmel, California; Diane Lynne Chanako from Sarasota, Florida; Evie Zimmer from Mayfield Heights, Ohio; Faith Amon from Orlando, Florida.

Edi's painting "Bugeisha" responds to the "Me Too" Movement. In her painting, Edi celebrates courage, speaking up, and standing against social, political, and environmental threats. In this self-portrait the artist in a Japanese samurai armor conveys courage, fearlessness, calm, and poise in the midst of turmoil as she references the famous painting "The Great Wave" by Hokusai, in the background.

Diane's painting "Searching" recounts the artist's own search for her next painting which she finds while observing her daughter engaged in a parallel state of mind. This painting reflects not only the proximity of the artist’s observations, but also the greater universal search for internal, external, and spiritual answers.

"Chiffon"
In this floral kaleidoscopic painting, Evie explores symbolisms related to beauty and femininity. The flowers contain the notion of their own and the human transient state. The mirroring of elements support the idea of eternal life, renewal, and the cycle of creation.

Faith photograph: "Mozambique" captures a woman and child in their environment.

10-Year Retrospective Exhibition

"Celebrating the Genius of Women"
by Maria Guerrero, Founder & Exec. Director, Women in the Arts Inc.

In this series we present works by Floridian artists Agata Powers, Anna McCambridge, Claire Paul, and Desislava Staykova-Learn from Düsseldorf, Germany.

Agata's portrait "Little Frida" asserts the importance of gaining confidence from an early age through a positive, strong, beautiful image of self; resonant and inspired by the renowned artist Frida Kahlo.

"Inner Bliss Of The Lion Hearted"
During a year of pandemic and civil unrest, Anna chose to celebrate "Black Joy."

"Fragility"
Claire, a visual artist and musician, responds to a performance direction inspired by the fragility of nature. The high-contrast portrait is juxtaposed against a negative space impression of a fern, connected by glass bead elements.

In her photograph "Pulse," Desislava simultaneously reconstructs reality into a minimalist abstraction by choreographing angles, scale, and time. The artist directs the eye into a newly discovered, alternate world.

10-Year Retrospective Exhibition

by Maria Guerrero, Founder & Exec. Director, Women in the Arts Inc.

This snapshot was taken as we were getting ready for our portrait by the Library's iconic staircase during the 2015 annual event: "Celebrating the Genius of Women."

In today's collection we feature recent works by Sara Hollamby, Silvia Cabrera Williams, Veronica Garcia-Bernal, Xiomara Aleksic.

In her photography piece: "Jelly," Sara expresses her awe and admiration for the planet and seeks to evoke in the viewer a heightened awareness of environmental stewardship. This work is part of the artist's "Worship" series.

Silvia's painting "Conal Rose Reflections" was inspired by memories of rose gardens her mother and grandmother grew. This abstraction shows how the roses are reflected in the artist’s memory.

Veronica painted "Pineapple Season" to reflect on the positive aspects of sustainable agriculture and its relationship to the environment. The artist highlights agriculture as an essential function to human survival and as a dignifying job. She presents the simplicity of country life by minimizing the color palette and emphasizing expression lines and shadows to bring attention to the effort, strength, and hard work this activity entails.

“Timeless” was inspired by a dream Xiomara had just after the painful loss of a family member. This painting is rich in symbolism: the armless clock, feather, and string relate to concepts of time after death, balance, and the frailty of life. The physical string divides both worlds and the existence of loved ones in them, represented by drangonflies.

You are invited to view these works at the Orlando Public Library. The digital exhibition represents fifty-eight artists from Orlando and around the world honored in this year's Retrospective Exhibition: Celebrating the Genius of Women.
