10-Year Retrospective Exhibition

by Maria Guerrero, Founder & Exec. Director, Women in the Arts Inc.

This snapshot was taken as we were getting ready for our portrait by the Library's iconic staircase during the 2015 annual event: "Celebrating the Genius of Women."

In today's collection we feature recent works by Sara Hollamby, Silvia Cabrera Williams, Veronica Garcia-Bernal, Xiomara Aleksic.

In her photography piece: "Jelly," Sara expresses her awe and admiration for the planet and seeks to evoke in the viewer a heightened awareness of environmental stewardship. This work is part of the artist's "Worship" series.

Silvia's painting "Conal Rose Reflections" was inspired by memories of rose gardens her mother and grandmother grew. This abstraction shows how the roses are reflected in the artist’s memory.

Veronica painted "Pineapple Season" to reflect on the positive aspects of sustainable agriculture and its relationship to the environment. The artist highlights agriculture as an essential function to human survival and as a dignifying job. She presents the simplicity of country life by minimizing the color palette and emphasizing expression lines and shadows to bring attention to the effort, strength, and hard work this activity entails.

“Timeless” was inspired by a dream Xiomara had just after the painful loss of a family member. This painting is rich in symbolism: the armless clock, feather, and string relate to concepts of time after death, balance, and the frailty of life. The physical string divides both worlds and the existence of loved ones in them, represented by drangonflies.

You are invited to view these works at the Orlando Public Library. The digital exhibition represents fifty-eight artists from Orlando and around the world honored in this year's Retrospective Exhibition: Celebrating the Genius of Women.

Enjoy the exhibition, connect with us and the artists on social media, and share this message with your audience.

Women in the Arts welcomes Sara Brown to the Board of Directors

Sara Brown, MBA
It is my pleasure to announce the nomination of Sara Brown as a new board member at Women in the Arts Inc., a 501(c)3 non-profit organization since 2007 in Orlando, Florida.

The board of directors welcomes Sara, as the board begins the quarterly meetings for 2019 at the Woman's Club of Winter Park.

Sara Brown is an Assistant Manager for the Orange County Library System (OCLS). She currently assists in managing the activities, programs, and staff at the Hiawassee Branch.

Sara holds a Master in Business Administration and is the founder of Success & Beyond Life Coaching, specializing in visioning and “Goal Getter” workshops, personal finance education, and inspiring others to dream beyond their limitations. A self-proclaimed “Budget Nerd,” Sara is obsessed with budgeting and loves reading personal finance and personal development books.

In 2009, as the Community Outreach Coordinator at OCLS, Sara worked with Women in the Arts, Inc. (WITA) Founder Maria Guerrero to establish the "Celebrating the Genius of Women" art exhibition and competition at the Orlando Public Library. The collaboration was the beginning of an annual event to celebrate women artists during Women’s History Month.

The event’s success resulted in additional viable partnerships between WITA and OCLS to bring art classes and exhibitions to various library locations throughout Orange County.

With thirty years of experience in nonprofit public service, project management, public speaking, and community outreach, Sara endeavors to continue her service to the community and the arts by supporting the mission and vision of Women in the Arts and its Community School of Arts, by serving as a member of the organization’s Board of Directors. Sara lives in Orlando, Florida with her husband and three daughters.
