Local finalists, selected the U.S. and international artists will receive awards, publicity, and public recognition at the Women in the Arts Awards event on March 28 in honor of Women's History Month. New work by Leah Wiedemer

It is a great pleasure to feature this new oil painting by artist Leah Wiedemer. In the past, I had the privilege to observe Leah capture a landscape scene with great accuracy, in a short amount of time, grasping the mood and light with great skill. 

This recent plein air oil painting "Sunrise on the Harbor", was created last fall in St. Augustine at an event sponsored by The Oil Painters of America. Leah explains:

"I arrived very early and was rewarded with the site of this spectacular sunrise. 

I snapped several quick photos and noted the colors. Back in my studio a few days later I began to plan the composition that would grow into this painting. I work with a limited palette of three or four colors plus white, and paint almost exclusively with painting knives."

Leah has developed a successful and extensive artistic career for over thirty years. Recent awards include the Quick Draw Award at the 2018 St. Augustine Plein Air event.

Her painting "October Fields" was included in The Oil Painters of America 2018 national exhibition and three of her works were part of the 2018 Richeson small works show.

In addition The National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society included Leah's oil painting "Pasture-ized" in their international online exhibition.

Leah lives in DeLand, Florida and is originally from Greensburg, Pennsylvania.

New work by Jacolien de Jong

One of the most rewarding aspects of holding the annual art competition "Celebrating the Genius of Women" is to welcome new artists and to keep connected with past participants and honorees.

Such is the case with Jacolien de Jong from The Netherlands. Jacolien received recognition at the 2016 Women in the Arts Awards at the Orlando Public Library, in the international category and has kept close to us since then.

It is my pleasure to share with you some of Jacolien's new drawings from her series: "Leaves On My Mind". 

Jacolien writes:

"For my latest work, a series of drawings titled ‘’Leaves On My Mind’’ my most important inspiration is found in nature.

As a child I collected flowers and leaves to dry them in books. I do a lot of hiking in the Netherlands and abroad. I am touched by the beauty of structures in leaves.

I collect leaves of plants and trees and use them as material in my artwork.

My recent artworks are mixed media on paper. I use different drawing materials together with paint, ink and organic material (the leaves of plant and trees) on paper. In my drawings I integrate leaves as material to visualise the human mind , body and brain."

Call for Artists: Women in the Arts competition 2019. Enter through Jan. 22, 11AM (ET)

At Women in the Arts, we are starting the New Year in great anticipation, receiving entries from women artists from Orlando and all over the world to be part of "Celebrating the Genius of Women"  at the Orlando Public Library.

The Call to Artists is open until January 22, however it is recommended to enter before the deadline. Selected artists will exhibit their work at the downtown library, an Orlando architectural landmark, open to the general public. The exhibition will be held at the main gallery during the months of March and April 2019.

The awards' event will be on March 23 (Save the Date!) when the public is invited to experience the unique opportunity to view the art and meet the artists at the gallery walk followed by the awards' event and reception.

This is the 8th. annual competition event, and each year it is most meaningful to have these amazing artists with us to celebrate their work in the arts, create community, and be forever inspired by their journey and creativity.

I invite all to pass along this message to all those women artists you admire and encourage them to enter this year's event.

Women in the Arts announces the start of its Ambassadors program reaching out to international women artists to enter the annual “Celebrating the Genius of Women” art competition, exhibition, and awards event at the Orlando Public Library.

We inaugurate this program with the collaboration of artist Radosveta Zhelyazkova from Bulgaria. Radosveta is an international artist, past honoree at the 2016 Women in the Arts Awards.

"I am excited to begin this initiative, Radosveta is an international artist on ascent I had the pleasure to meet at last year’s competition. I am thrilled to have Radosveta as one of the competition ambassadors as we continue to recognize and award the work of local and international women artists at the annual Women in the Arts celebration."

Women in the Arts open Call to Artists for the 2017 Art Competition

"Celebrating the Genius of Women" at the Orlando Public Library

Local Artists | ENTER

Women in the Arts, Inc. invite professional female artists to submit their work to be exhibited during Women’s History Month at the Orlando Public Library. Finalists will be chosen from the entries submitted.

Selected art will be featured in the upcoming Annual Celebrating the Genius of Women exhibition at the Orlando Public Library in March and April 2017. Finalists will be eligible for $1500 in cash prizes. The Women in the Arts Awards event is March 25.

U.S. and International Artists | ENTER

Women in the Arts invites non-local and international women artists to enter the competition. Selected art will be part of an online exhibition at the Orlando Public Library during the months of March and April 2017. The artists will be recognized at the Women in the Arts Awards event on March 25.
